    Curator's Note:

Having grown up in Hiroshima, Japan, and making many visits to Miyajima, this work always brings back memories of this beautiful island. I can smell the Momiji Manju which permeated the streets of the Old Town. I can remember the deer walking out to the Itsukushima Torii during low tide. I haven't been back in over 20 years, but looking at this work takes me back, even if it's just for a few minutes.

Gihachiro Okuyama adds nice perspective to this print with the lanterns contrasting the Torii in the distance. The water is calm and the trees are peaceful. A perfect setting to enjoy the natural beauty of the island and the history that flowed through this region. According to records, the shrine was established in the time of Empress Suiko. Empress Suiko reigned from 593AD until her death in 628AD. The warrior-courtier Taira no Kiyomori gave the shrine its present form. Taira no Kiyomori (平 清盛, 1118 – March 20, 1181) was a military leader of the late Heian period of Japan. He established the first samurai-dominated administrative government in the history of Japan.
