  • Woman Seated Beneath a Large Tree by Chiura Obata (Japan, 1885-1975). Painting in sumi ink of a woman seated peacefully beneath a tree. Dates to July 23, 1934. A beautifully executed scene with a masterful use of ink and water which adds depth, dimension and emotion. Signed by the artist bottom right. Chiura Obata taught at Berkeley between 1932 and 1954, and made many study paintings as demonstration to his students. This work may have been done as a demonstration to his students, or as one of his many studies of Northern California. His mastery of line is practically unequalled in 20th century American art. The University of California, Berkeley preserved all of his paintings while Obata and his family were interned in Utah during WWII. Provenance: Originally from one of Chiura Obata's grandchildren.
